Áurea Ana Palace by Eurostars Hotel Company
We chose Áurea Ana Palace for two buildings with real pedigree merged into one hotel:...
The building at Országház utca 17, in the heart of Buda Castle, dates to the 1400s, when it first housed a craftsmen's guild and later a bakery. In 1964 it became the Old Parliament House Restaurant, keeping its Baroque street front through the decades that followed, and in 2016 a Hungarian-American owner reopened it as Maison Bistro & Hotel, a seventeen-room design property built directly into the old Spiegel House. Rather than erase the centuries in between, the renovation kept them visible, tiled stoves, a traditional oven, a wine cellar, so the hotel reads as the latest chapter of a building that has fed and housed people in this corner of the Castle District for close to six hundred years.
We selected Maison for a consistency that is unusual even among Budapest's better addresses: the hotel has held a 9.5 score on Booking.com for years, reportedly the only four-star property in the city to do so, alongside a 4.9 rating on Google. The bistro downstairs has been voted among Hungary's five best kitchens by Dining City's readers, which means the ground floor earns its keep on its own terms, not only as a hotel restaurant. Seventeen rooms keep the scale intimate, and the historic features, the stoves, the cellar, the Baroque façade, are original to the building rather than added for atmosphere.
Maison sits inside Buda Castle, a few minutes' walk from Fisherman's Bastion and about four hundred metres from Matthias Church, placing it at the quiet, residential end of one of Budapest's most visited districts rather than on its busiest lane. The Castle district charges a daily parking fee for cars entering the area, and reception issues a discounted ticket for guests who drive, worth knowing before arrival. For travellers who want to wake up inside the Castle walls rather than commute to them each morning, this is one of the few hotels that allows it.
Price: €€€
Vibe: historic, design-boutique, adults-only
Rooms: 17, 20 to 40 m², plus Petite Maison annex rooms
Best For: couples wanting a historic Castle District base
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the Suite's four-poster bed, whirlpool and welcome champagne
Dining: an on-site bistro ranked among Hungary's top five kitchens, plus a wine cellar and coffee house
Amenities: garden and terrace, wine cellar, L'Occitane toiletries, adults-only policy
Attractions: Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church a short walk away, inside the Buda Castle district
Rooms run from Deluxe Doubles and Twins up to the Suite, with sizes between 20 and 40 square metres and a handful of annex rooms, the Petite Maison category, set a short distance from the main building around a private patio. The Suite is the one to request if the budget allows: a four-poster bed, a whirlpool bath, bathrobes, and champagne and pastries on arrival. Grand rooms add a private terrace, and L'Occitane toiletries run through every bathroom. No two rooms share quite the same atmosphere, a deliberate choice that keeps the hotel feeling more like a collected house than a chain property with seventeen identical doors.
Dining City's readers placed Maison's bistro among Hungary's five best kitchens, a result that owes as much to the setting as the cooking: a dining room built around a wine cellar and a traditional oven, both original to the building's centuries as a working bakery and restaurant. The kitchen leans into Hungary's gastronomic past rather than reinventing it, and the wine list draws on the cellar downstairs. For guests who never leave the Castle district during their stay, the bistro is reason enough not to.
